Reminiscing: Our Antiques Buying Trip in Venezia

OMG - we had the best two week buying trip to Venice! Good times . . . good times . . .
We made some great friends as well as some amazing business connections ~ so many possibilities
for the future. We brought home a lot of wonderful pieces that are all available on our website.
Besides great food and great exploring, our favorites have got to be the amazing antiques!

Madonna & Child Terra 16th Century Italian 17th Century
Cotta Plaque Prayer Altar Niche

These are the only 3 pieces that we have left. We found them all at a great, little tiny antique shop right around the corner from our apartment. The prayer altar was found in a great palazzo on the grand canal
where it was used as a family altar for many generations. It is believed to be from the Louis the XV era.

The Madonna & Child is a very heavy piece with a really great energy. Valentina told us it was quite a mystery as to where it originated and who did the work. She found it in a tiny private chapel in Tuscany. We fell in love with it instantly!

The Niche is amazing as well. The colors on it are still so bright! It smells old & woodsy like one of the great Italian churches. We would use this piece as an altar.

We stayed in Venice for two weeks at the amazing Palazzo Malipiero, located on the Campo San Samuele right across from the Palazzo Grassi.

Our pallazo is the one on the right. This was a really great location and if you look closely you will notice the gondola parked in front. This is a traghetto stop so the gondola is available during the day for a straight trips across the Grand Canal. I think you pay 1 or 2 euro and people just stand up and they short cut you across. These gondolas are bare bones, nothing fancy at all. But the really cool thing was late at night in clear weather and once during an amazing lightning storm, we would just go sit in the gondola and enjoy the ambiance.

Yes we are a little dorky. Anyway . . . back to the palazzo - it is also said that Casanova lived here!

But while it sounds like a perfect place to stay, we can't really recommend it. It is truly a crumbling palace. Our reserved apartment was on the very top floor. Basically what used to be the attic, so while it did have view of the Grand Canal, it was kind of claustrophobic! We felt like we were on a ship - we could literally feel the place moving and we were instantly sea sick. We went out for lunch and we were both kind of depressed to think of spending two weeks there. We called our booking company http://www.viewsonvenice.com/ and they came over right away and found us a much larger apartment with a terrace in the same pallazo. They were really great and then we felt much better!!

After shopping at antique markets, traveling all around the Veneto and Verona this is Valentina's shop where we finally chose the perfect items to bring home for our website.

Look closely, that is our 16th Century Italian Prayer Altar in her window. It had been her favorite piece since she opened the shop and she really did get a little teary when we decided to buy it. She called her little daughter over and they both said goodbye to the altar. It is a beautiful, special piece and I think we will be sad to see it go as well. Now is a great time to buy it though. We got some great deals in Venice - we found that the prices on antiques can be totally out of control. We shopped around for two weeks and on the last day we went back to Valentina's shop to pick out our favorites. In Verona we fell in love with some great items but the prices were 20,000 euro and up for these same type of spiritual antiques. We trusted Valentina, each antique comes with a signed letter of authenticity and we have already done all the work of shipping to the US and paying customs taxes. Our 2012 sale prices are actually below what we paid in Italy. We are ready to part with these pieces and head back to find some more.

Ginormous Candles

We love Del Dotto Vineyards! Stopped by yesterday at their Napa Caves and picked up these gorgeous large format bottles to make candles for the estate.

Now just to put this in perspective, the small bottle on the right in front is a regular 750 ml bottle of wine. The biggest one in the middle is 18 L, it holds 24 bottles of wine!! These are gonna make some awesome candles.

The Joys of Working From Home

Where is winter?? We are enjoying a record number of warm January days with temperatures in the sixties! Today we took a break from candle making and enjoyed our lunch on the deck. Veggie sandwiches with eggplant, avocado, carrot, cucumber, pepperocinis and kale on toasted sourdough . . . and you certainly can't beat the view!

Well, this post should have been put up about 8 months ago: on March 28th we both decided to go vegan! I guess you could say that it was just the right time in our lives to make that change. Neither one of us have been huge meat eaters, but we were definitely eating a lot of chicken, ground turkey, fish, eggs and cheese in order to make sure we were getting enough protein in our diets. Not only are we animal lovers and interested in the well being of our planet, but we had been having many conversations wondering why soooo many people get cancer. Cancer seems to have no rhyme or reason, with many seemingly healthy people being attacked by the disease. At about this time a few great books coincidentally entered our lives:

5. I'll be forever grateful that alcohol is vegan. An occasional martini is good for the soul.

We feel like a whole new world of food has opened up to us. So many great new recipes, new vegetables and new ideas. We really haven't missed animal products AT ALL! Even sushi, which we love so much has still been very satisfying when you order delicious veggie rolls. The key is having one of these good books because they really teach you which products are good, how to use them and where to find them. Once you learn the basics it is pretty easy. Believe it or not, our husbands quickly got on board, then the kids and then our parents. We are not extremely strict with them. The kids eat this way at home, but when they are out they still eat what is available to them. The boys will eat the occasional hamburger and they all still enjoy cheese pizza. We believe that they are learning to make healthier choices in their lives and that by making the change at home, a huge percentage of their diet has changed for the better. Most visitors and guests to our home are served a vegan meal and they always LOVE it!!(Usually they don't even know.)
No more counting calories or carbs. We are enjoying whole foods and any extra weight is slowly falling away. We will give you an update at our one year mark - that will be our check point to see if our bodies have sort of found their natural state of healthy well being.

Hard Day's Work

Delivered a lot of beautiful Recycled Wine Bottle Candles to Napa and Sonoma today. We decided to enjoy our lunch break at Clos Pegase with a crisp bottle of their Sauvignon Blanc. We sat next to our favorite old Italian fountain next to the vineyard, under an old walnut tree. The fresh fallen walnuts and a few fallen grapes made for the perfect snack. This is a great stop if you are in the Calistoga area. Clos Pegase is known as "America's first monument to wine and art." It's a really fun place to explore with an amazing array of sculpture, art and architecture. Ask for Cherilyn and tell her the candle girls sent you!

Napa Wine Tasting Guide

Of course it is pretty hard to go wrong in Napa these days. There is so much to see and so many great wineries to visit. If your budget is unlimited and you know what kind of wine you like then just go for it. Drive down the 29 through Rutherford, Healdsburg and St. Helena and stop wherever your heart desires. Most of the wine will be great. But if you want to narrow it down a little bit, these are just a few of the places that we like to visit on a regular basis. They all seem to have something a little bit out of the ordinary.

Please note: these are in no particular order! The cave tastings have to be pre-scheduled and take about 1 1/2 - 2 hrs. so your best bet is to pick up a local winery map - they have them at all the wineries and shops, or look at this one on-line: http://napavalley.com/maps/ before you go and pick your destinations according to your scheduled tour times and how many days you have to enjoy the Napa Valley.

Schramsberg - Charming and full of grand history, this is one of our favorite spots. Schramsberg sparkling wine has been served at many presidential dinners and it is great to see the commemorative photos and invitations on the wall to prove it. Great cave tour, fab sparkling wines, very educational and great people. You'll leave feeling like a personal friend of the winery.

Mumm Napa - perfect patio and fabulous tasting portions. This is a good place to just chill for a little while, especially if the sun is shining through the clouds over the beautiful Napa Valley. This is one of my favorite views of the valley with the mountains across the way. Love it! They have an art gallery you can enjoy with a glass of champagne. Culture, stunning views and delicious sparkling wines...also a great gift shop.

Del Dotto - cave tour and tasting. The Rutherford winery is very Italian & full of marble with opulent caves that have barrel tasting and venetian chandeliers. Great wines, fun guides and snacks when you are done. We haven't been to the Historic Winery yet, but maybe we will go this week! We hear it is even more authentic as the caves were some of the first in the Napa Valley dug by Chinese laborers in 1885.

Indian Springs - A trip to Indian Springs is not complete without experiencing our Olympic-sized mineral pool. The pool is the heart and soul of Indian Springs. Built in 1913, the Mission Revival-style pool replaced the original 19th century "plunge."

The view from the pool is of the nearby mountains and steam rising from Indian Springs' geysers. The 230-degree geysers keep the mineral pool at 102 degrees in the winter and 92 degrees in the summer. The water's warmth adds a healing element to the bathing experience...soak, rest and then soak some more.

Our New Favorite Wine

Amarone . . . Amarone della Valpolicella, usually known as Amarone, is a typically rich Italian dry red wine made from the partially dried grapes of the Corvina (40.0% – 70.0%), Rondinella (20.0% – 40.0%) and Molinara (5.0% – 25.0%) varieties. - Wikipedia definition

As you know, we love all things Italian! So it should come as no surprise that we love wine. Our wine bottle candles have allowed us to spend a lot of time in the Napa Valley where our palates have become very sophisticated. We have even been classified by certain wine experts as professional wine tasters! So in preparation for our next Italy trip we have been attempting to educate ourselves on Italian wines beyond the obvious house prosecco or chianti.

Our professional wine tasting friend Cindy found the beautiful Amarone during her recent working trip in Germany. We thank her for sharing her find and we are now seeking this wine out whenever possible. We have had a few great bottles at Via Veneto and Perbacco in San Francisco.

Here is the Amarone that started it all. We highly recommend: Masi Costasera Classico Amarone because not only is it delicious, but it makes a perfect recycled wine bottle candle when you are done! You can find this Amarone for about $50 at select wine stores, but if you don't want to pay that much the Masi Campofiorin Rosso Del Veronese is only about $15 and it's really quite nice too.

So apparently Brad and Angelina had the right idea . . . Amarone is the star of the Valpolicella region, delicious and off dry. A dense, concentrated wine with a velvety texture, it is at once lavishly fruity with a refreshing acidity. Highly aromatic, notes could include all forms of cherry (dried cherry, cooked cherry, maraschino cherry), coffee, almonds or leather. The winemaking process is a unique and fascinating ancient Roman tradition in Valpolicella, called "Appassimento". It entails the drying of grapes bunches after harvest for up to 4 months (or shorter if fans are used in the drying room), allowing them to shrivel like raisins before pressing, vinifying and aging. - borrowed from http://www.cellartours.com/

Spotlight on Spirit Series: Places - SEDONA, AZ

In this series we will explore SACRED SPIRITUAL SITES around the world that we hope to visit someday soon. But let's start with a few places that are close to home . . .

We first visited Sedona, AZ about ten years ago. We lived in Southern California at the time, so it was a quick plane ride to Phoenix and then a short rental car drive to get there.

We noticed a different sort of energy in the air as soon as we stepped out of the car. I remember making a stop at the grocery store (yes we might have been buying wine for the room!) and feeling a little bit dizzy (before the wine) as we were walking in to the store.

Not only is Sedona a gorgeous place to visit, it is a well know SPIRITUAL VORTEX area. There are several vortex sites in Sedona. As described at http://www.lovesedona.com/: There are four main energy vortexes in Sedona. The subtle energy that exists at these locations interacts with who a person is inside. The energy resonates with and strengthens the Inner Being of each person that comes within about a quarter to a half mile of it. This resonance happens because the vortex energy is very similar to the subtle energy operating in the energy centers inside each person. If you are at all a sensitive person, it is easy to feel the energy at these vortexes.

We experienced and loved all of the four main vortexes; Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock, Airport Vortex and Boynton Canyon. They are each unique and special in their own way.

Bell Rock: Great for easy rock climbing/hiking. Lots of twisted Juniper trees (said to be influenced by the swirling energy centers) & beautiful views. Bell Rock is said to represent both the masculine and feminine energy creating a balanced energy field at the site.

Airport Vortex: For us this vortex was the most powerful and recognizable energy force. It actually made me a little dizzy and gave me a headache the first time I went there. Again great views and easy hiking. Known for its masculine energy. Airport vortex is where we took our Dad on one of our later trips to Sedona. He is our known skeptic and even he could not deny the energy he felt at this spot!

Cathedral Rock: This vortex is said to strengthen feminine energy. We accessed this area by walking along the Oak Creek trail. We didn't actually hike the rocks here, but the creek was amazing and peaceful - sort of otherworldly with hundreds of rock stacks built by previous seekers. Great calming energy.

Boynton Canyon: Unexpectedly powerful. This is where we stayed on our first trip to Sedona; The Enchantment Resort located in Boynton Canyon - www.enchantmentresort.com. I think before we went we had heard some sort of scary stories about the energy of the canyon; strange experiences that people had there. But since this is where the best and most luxurious spa and resort was located, this is where we stayed. It was amazing and beautiful and healing. We had a good time laying out blankets and star gazing from our balcony! I won't name any names, but some people were scared silly with all the open wilderness surrounding us there.

We hiked all around the resort. There is lots of wild area for short evening hikes to enjoy the sunset and the bats! Bats are said to be symbolic of spiritual enlightenment and there was certainly a lot of them around. Then there are also the longer day hikes where you can find and go into Indian caves and ruins - amazing!

We sat on the edge of the cave dwelling and meditated for quite awhile. I tried to find our pictures but this was before digital!

This is also where we had our first full spa day: http://www.enchantmentresort.com/sedona-spa-miiamo/. Our mom was with us on this trip, so the three of us each had 2 or 3 spa treatments scheduled. We did a yoga class, had lunch, lounged by the pool enjoying the red rock views and hung out in the tranquil meditation room. Simply AMAZING. We tried the Stones Massage, Reading of the Moment session, Simply Shirodhara and Aromatherapy Massage. All of them were sublime.

We have visited Sedona 3 or four times now and every time has held new adventures and discoveries. There are obviously a lot of psychics and healers available. We recommend you do some research before you go and try to find someone with a lot of experience who meets your needs. Some are definitely more powerful and enlightened than others.

Saw the movie The Tourist last week and that got us all dreaming of going to Venice again really SOON! The cinematography was gorgeous, of course we will watch any movie that is filmed in Venice just to get the feel of what it is like to be there again. Spotlight on Spirit Series: People - Ricky Martin

We both recently finished reading Ricky Martins' new book ME. Now just so you know, we are not embarrassed to say that we have been Ricky fans since we were young. He's just so cute! We used to make up our own dances to his Menudo songs, we watched him on General Hospital, and we found him very sexy in the La Vida Loca days. He has always seemed like a very genuine type of person and his book only serves to re-enforce that. Some of you might be surprised to see Ricky in our category on spiritual people. We are pleasantly surprised to see place him here.

This book definitely reveals a beautiful spiritual journey. One of the obvious issues Ricky deals with is his homosexuality. It seems he tortured himself for a long time on this, while many of his fans were not too surprised when he finally came out with the news. He really lets us inside his mind and eventually his heart and takes us on this journey of self-acceptance with him. The beauty is the message of love that comes through. He had to wait until the moment was right and he was in touch with the deepest parts of himself before he could reveal his truth to his public. His story reveals a great depth and capacity for true love, and isn't that what life is really all about? "I'm a romantic!" he says. "And I do believe in perfect love. I believe love never hurts. I believe love is trust, peace, calm, confidence; being playful and mischievous. In other words, for me love is freedom . . ." Shouldn't we all be so clearly able to define what it is that we believe and seek from love in our lives. To us his point is being true to yourself and seeking and believing in true love, who cares if it is with a man or a woman. We hope this book will contribute to overcoming prejudice and will help to lead the world toward living with an open heart, accepting people for who they are and encouraging each person to look within themselves and embark on their own spiritual journey.

Our main motivation, however, in writing about this book is to help bring attention to the cause that Ricky Martin has become dedicated to. It is so clear that he has found his true purpose on this path.

April was once told by a fabulous psychic that she was an orphan in a past life raised by the Franciscan monks in Assisi! Assisi the birthplace of St. Francis, who founded the religious order in1208 and St. Clare, the founder of the Poor Sisters which became the Order of Poor Clares after her death. Saint Gabriel Of Our Lady of Sorrows of the 19th century was also born in Assisi. Churches include the Basilica of San Francesco of Assisi (pictured on the far left), Santa Maria Maggiore, The Cathedral of San Rufino, Basilica of Santa Chiara, Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, Chiesa Nuova, Santo Stefano and Eremo delle Carceri a small monastery with church at a canyon. In Assisi we will hear Dr. Dyer speak in the Abby of St. Pietro – a Benedictine Monastery built in the 13th century and established in the heart of Assisi. From the Basilica we go to a masterpiece called the Porzuincola (pictured above) which is a structure built around the little church that became the home of St. Francis.

Lourdes is a small market town lying in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains. Famous for the Marian apparitions of Our Lady of Lourdes that are reported to have occurred in 1858 to Bernadette Soubirous. At that time, the most prominent feature of the town was the fortified castle that rises up from a rocky escarpment at it's center. Following the reports that Our Lady of Lourdes had appeared to Bernadette on a total of eighteen occasions, Lourdes has developed into a major place of Roman Catholic pilgrimage and of alleged miraculous healings.

Today Lourdes is the largest pilgrimage site in France. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes (pictured on left) is a place of mass pilgrimage from Europe and around the world. The spring water from the grotto (right) is believed to possess healing properties. The Roman Catholic Church has officially recognized 67 miraculous healings which were stringently examined for authenticity.

After a three hour scenic tour along the one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world we arrive at one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Europe. It was in the small village of Medjugorje that on June 24th 1981, six local teenagers claimed that the Holy Virgin appeared and spoke to them.

Since then, the village and its surroundings have become a booming attraction for visitors from all over the world hoping to glimpse the Virgin Mary on Apparition Hill (or Visionary Hill as sometimes called), where she supposedly was first seen.

The Mom Cave

Driving in the car this morning I heard a discussion on the radio about "The Mom Cave." The women were talking about how men have "The Man Cave," aka the garage, or the sports room or TV room - you know a place strictly for the guys. The debate raged as the men called in complaining that women basically rule the whole house anyway, or how the mom cave for most women is the kitchen! Funny stuff, but actually I think they were making a great point. As I was driving I thought, "We already have "The Mom Cave" and it's a lot more luxurious and beautiful than most of those callers were even dreaming of for themselves."

Our Zen-Tents got started in a way very similar to this. As young mothers we were always trying to carve out our own space for peace and quiet. Not an easy thing to do with tiny kids and a husband. We both always had an altar somewhere in our house. This gave us a sacred space to return to when things got a little crazy. At one point we even had a coat closet turned into a meditation room! These were wonderful places of serenity. We filled them with special objects to remind us of how lucky we were in our lives. Small crystals and stones, spiritual sculptures of crosses and Buddhas, souvenirs from special trips, photos, quotes, journals, angel cards, incense, etc.

After years of travel and inspiration, a love of Italian fabrics, visions of India's royal tents and a nod to Moroccan style, the Zen-Tent emerged from our imaginations. The special spot we dreamed of to claim our own peace and re-claim our inner spirits. Beautiful, luxurious and with curtains that close!!

"The Mom Cave" has evolved. We love when our kids or our friends join us there. You'd be amazed how many people can fit inside at the same time. We've had very special moments in our Zen-Tents and we sincerely believe that every mom, every woman, actually every person deserves her/or his own sacred space. Call it whatever you like - just create it and CLAIM your PEACE.

Besides our frequent trips to the Napa Valley (which we love!), business and pleasure have also had us spending a bit of time in San Francisco and Las Vegas this past month. Now, I know these are not grand European holidays, but I must say that any travel is much, much better than no travel at all! Our lives get busy and monotonous . . . if we aren't careful things can get a bit boring. We get sucked into our own little tunnel vision of life. The beauty of travel for us gypsy sisters is the new perspective and new ideas we get while on the road.

The Power of Meditation

From a spiritual stand point, this might be all wrong. But I really have to tell you that meditation works.

Call it whatever you want: relaxation, connecting to spirit, tapping into the greater being, visualization, positive affirmations, flow dreaming, the law of attraction . . . shall I go on?

There are many names for it. I like to call it Entering The Silence. It is the essence of becoming centered. Grounding into whatever it is that you believe is guiding your life force; Universal Energy . . . God . . . Jesus . . . Angels . . . Spirit . . . Inner Being . . . Higher Self . . .
It doesn't really matter what name you use, they are completely personal -whatever works for you.

What I know for sure is this: when I focus on connecting within myself to a greater source, life begins to shift a little. It usually takes a few days of conscious effort and then I notice a positive difference. Of course when I see the tangible results, I am often so amazed by my ability that I get thrown off course for a few days while I celebrate my creation. But in all seriousness this is very real.

I am thankful for the very beautiful results that are being shown to me at this time. So this is the Zengari Guide to Meditation.

1.) Create a SACRED SPACE that you can return to everyday.
We recommend a Zen-Tent:) but any designated spot will do.
Create your own personal altar that reflects your spirit &
your beliefs.
It can be as simple as a small table with candles, photos, statues,
crystals, crosses, etc . . . whatever items remind you of a higher power.

2.)Sit or lay comfortably and just BREATHE.
Many texts recommend sitting so that you don't fall asleep, but I personally love to lay down. It is a position of more comfort, more surrender & more openness to me.
Breathe in & out. Focus on the breathe. As thoughts arise, just let them drift on by.(I actually like to keep a notepad near by so that I can jot down some of the more important thoughts. I find that these are often valid insights & if I write them down I am then free to move on, knowing I can come back to them later.)

3.)Play MUSIC that is relaxing &/or uplifting for you.
This is often an easier way to enter a realm of higher vibration. It helps to raise your vibration and create sacred space, separate from simple relaxation.
Rhapsody, Pandora, MySpace - many great online resources to find soothing tunes.

4.)A great way to start any session is with GRATITUDE. Sometimes just thinking about all of the good things that you have in your life can lift your energy instantly. This is a good practice throughout the day. Look around for things that you LOVE. Small & large - this can easily change your perspective. Most people complain about all the things they hate. Imagine being the person thinking about and commenting on what you LOVE & APPRECIATE.

5.)Another option is to download or purchase GUIDED MEDITATIONS.

6.)Practice using oracle cards, tarot cards, goddess cards, angel cards, inspirational message cards, etc. These decks simply provide a focus for your practice. The beauty is the more that you use them, the more information they tend to provide. A very nice way to receive messages about your life.

Just remember that simply sitting quietly for 5 minutes can bring about more peace in your world. Likewise, a short afternoon rest or nap can be equally beneficial. Deep breathing with a free mind is a wonderful thing. Daydream a little ...

The goal is to find a space and style that works for you. There are many meditation practices out there. At Zengari we believe that it can be simple and it can be easy. Start here and expand to more specific and complex practices as your heart desires. A simple feeling of connecting to yourself or to the universe can revitalize your energy, creativity & desire.

Also try to remember that meditation & a dedication to more peace & quiet in your life may not present instantaneous results. It is more like a cumulative effect, a slight increase in your energy vibration. Do it for the relaxation benefits & enjoy the spiritual benefits as they show up. The synchronicity in your life is sure to increase. Happiness & abundance as well.

We took the Zen-Tents on the road last month and found ourselves enjoying a very luxurious Emmy Party!! It was a blast. We met some famous and fabulous people and made some great connections along the way. Our tents were a big hit & we got a lot of nice feedback from the Hollywood crowd.

In case you don't know the set-up, we have three Zen-Tents on-line that are available to rent for private events, but mostly we specialize in custom tent designs. We are currently in negotiations with NYC, LA & Carmel to add some beautiful stores to our network. Stay tuned and keep an eye out for Zen-Tents. Bringing more peace to the world one tent at a time!

Thanks so much to Nathalie Dubois and DPA & Associates for hosting the event, as well as Eric & Glory Wee for spoiling us rotten at their own private Hotel Hermosa. The hot tub, home cooked meals, red wine & ocean view were the perfect combination for these tired gypsies. Every single person we met at this event was kind, friendly & amazing. We are looking forward to working with our friends Erika Siefred of Eva Varro and Mercedes of Jus d'amour & Mercedes Music in the future. LA, Beverly Hills & Hermosa Beach were rockin'. We can't wait to go back!
We are now dreaming of peace and zen in the home of each and every gracious person we met at the event, as well as plotting our own screenplay and future story ideas to make our personal mark on Hollywood. (Seriously . . . we are not even kidding, we have some great ideas!)

Our Secret Spot

Ok, this is a big secret to give away, but it is such a cool little spot that we have to share it with you. This is really the only private space we have found directly on the Grand Canal that is public and easy to get to. It's a perfect spot for photos and a fabulous place to bring your own bottle of vino and enjoy the sunset. It's nestled in between palazzos with marble steps and little boat docks. Directions: From the Palzzo Grassi go around the church of San Samuele and head south on Calle Malipiero, right at Ramo Corte Teatro, then straight until you reach the Corte Sforza. ENJOY. Hopefully next time we are there we will meet you.

Nightlife & Entertainment in Venice

Let's face it, Venice is not known for its nightlife. However, we have always found plenty of things to do and see.
GRAN TEATRO LA FENICE - It's worth going even if you don't like opera. You can take a tour during the day or see a performance in the evening. A very Venetian thing to do. MUSICA A PALAZZO - You may see people dressed in costume handing out invitations to these events. We were worried that it might be a tourist trap, but we were pleasantly surprised. Performed in amazing & historic palazzos you will experience opera up close and personal. I had to move my feet out of the way a few times for the actress to walk past. Quite a unique experience. PUB - The Devil's Forest Pub. Located near Campo St. Bartolomeo; just 5 minutes on foot from the famous Rialto Bridge.
SANTA MARGARITA SQUARE - The most nightlife to be found in Venice. Young locals gather here with many small bars/restaurants and outdoor seating. Dorsodoro.
Ask around . . . last time we were there we found a few bands playing live music!
RELAX on LIDO - If time permits and you are there during the warm season, the island of LIDO is a great place to get away from it all. This is where locals go to the beach! The entire island has a slower pace and a beachy feel. Accessible via vaporetto.

In case you haven't noticed, we are in love with Venice. Her mysterious spirit, crumbling beauty, and ancient canals call to us. Every 6 months or so we are aching to return. For now, we will enjoy writing about a few of our favorite places. Until we return again . . .

Churches - Explore & Enjoy as many as possible. Great places to rest and soak up the history of Venice.

Cafes - enjoy your morning or afternoon coffee off of the main streets if possible, here you find better prices and neighborhood regulars. Pastries &/or paninis make for a great breakfast. You'll also usually find fresh fruit & juice too. Locals stand at the bar, we usually pay the extra to enjoy a table.

Take a Break - Most of the gorgeous hotels have a nice lobby bar or terrace. This is a great way to soak up the ambiance even if you are not staying there.

HOTEL DANIELI - The most beautiful lobby in Venice. Perfect place to stop, rest and get away from the crowd. Order a drink in the bar and enjoy stepping back in time. http://www.danieli.hotelinvenice.com/

HOTEL BAUER - Gorgeous terrace on the Grand Canal. The drinks may be a little pricey, but your paying for the view of Salute, plus they bring nuts & snacks. Try the bellini in any flavor. http://www.bauervenezia.com/

HOTEL AL PONTE ANTICO - Located just steps from the Rialto Bridge, this has got to be one of the best public balconies overlooking the Grand Canal. Perfect at sunset. Friendly staff, tiny place. Pack your bags and then go back and take out half of it! It's so much easier and much more european to pack light. Americans are easy to spot hauling their giant suitcases over the bridges of Venice. Casual elegance is the goal. Comfort is number one - lots of walking means you must have comfortable shoes. It's nice to have at least a couple of daytime shoes so that tired feet can switch off day to day. Hopefully you can get by with one pair dressy shoes for evening, or boots in the winter. Venice is hot in the summer and cold in the winter, luckily these days it is easy to check a weather report before you go and pack accordingly. It has rained on us many times in Venice, but it only adds to the charm. On our last visit we sat in an empty traghetto on the Grand Canal, outside of our apartment and enjoyed a lightning storm directly over Venice. It was amazing. High water (aqua alta) occurs about sixty days a year between October and early January. At this time of year it might be a good idea to pack your rain boots, or just by some when you get there. They do place wooden walkways in all the main tourist areas that keep you above the water, but check this website if your planning a trip around that time; http://www.veniceword.com/ Anyway, Venice is a water city so don't let a little more water stop you!

We recommend flying directly in Marco Polo airport. Then take a water taxi into Venice. A taxi can be arranged through your hotel, or just pick one up at the airport. Average rates are around 100 euro. Entering this mystical city by water is the only way to go, especially if it is your first time, but every time really. It allows you to acclimate to the water mode of transportation and just gives you great romantic views as you enter Venice.

Venice is an amazingly safe and friendly city. Surprisingly, most tourists come in via train just for the day, so in the evening Venice quiets down a lot. After dinner is a great time to take stroll. On our very first night ever in Venice we were jet lagged and took a late nap, waking up at 1 am. We got dressed and went to see St. Marks Square!! It was beautiful, romantic and empty . . . except for a group of young locals playing guitar and singing american songs!! We stopped to sing for awhile and enjoyed a unique and fabulous first night.

The Vaporretto, or water buses, are a great way to get around. You can by different usage passes and quickly get familiar with the routes. Check out http://www.hellovenezia.com/ for more info.
Some of the lines run very late at night, so this is a nice way to enjoy the lights of the Grand Canal after all the crowds have left. Take your ipod and get a good seat up front and just cruise the canale. Cheap entertainment at its finest.

We always enjoy limiting the number of destinations we visit on each trip in favor of staying one place longer and really soaking up the feel of the city to get a more genuine experience. Depending on how much time you have this is a great way to travel. It is amazing how quickly you begin to recognize people and feel like a local when you do local things like go to the same cafe every morning. We generally stay in apartments when we travel. It just adds to the authenticity and gives us a lot more freedom and options throughout our stays. For example, we are able to visit the markets and cook or just keep snacks in the kitchen. Cheese shops are great, of course the fish market at Rialto, but our favorite is the produce boat on a small canal in Dorsodoro. Try the rocket & tomatos, then pick up some buffalo mozzarella to go with it; perfect. There is a wide range of apartments available for most tastes and budgets. You'll be amazed at how many vacational rentals there are. We love a view of the water and of course location is important. But a quiet part of town is often better than being right on a main attraction. Venice is pretty small, just look for easy access to vaporetto stops or bridges. We love staying in Dorsordoro, the Saint Stefano area or the Zattere with its long waterfront promenade and expansive views of Giudecca. These places are all quiet with a very authentic feel. It really is hard to go wrong. Just pay close attention to the size of the apartment, those Italians really have a nack for taking pictures that make rooms look bigger than they are. Also, don't be surprised when you find the beds not especially soft, and often justs 2 twins pushed together to make a king.

When traveling to Venezia be prepared to both remember & forget everything you have heard or read about the most unique city in the world; La Serenissima, The Most Serene Republic. We firmly believe that if you are going to Venice, the best formula for experiencing the wonders that she has to offer begins with reading a few guide books, getting a feel for the layout of the islands, making a few notes of names of famous sights and recommended restaurants, taking them to Venice with you, maybe even reading over them a little on the flight . . . then simply leaving it all behind. Leave every book in your room or apartment and enjoy the thrill of discovery. We find it much more adventurous and entertaining to explore Venice on our own, following any path we choose and stumbling upon the great treasures that Venezia has to offer. This way you cand find yourself in tiny calles, far off the beaten path and suddenly a warm, cozy trattoria will appear. You sit down to have an afternoon snack and a bottle of prosecco, only to realize that yes - you do recognize the name of this place and it is world famous for its seafood risotto!! But the fun is that you just stumbled upon this great find. Likewise and even more so for the churches. We can't really imagine following directions to find our way around Venice. They are confusing and time consuming. The grand churches that consigned work from the most prestigious artists of the time are more magnificent than most museums around the world. Let us just say that directions and addresses are hard to follow in Venezia. Better off to wander and live by the old adage of "Never pass a church without going inside!" The churches are many in Venice and the ones not worth going in are few. Regardless of your religion, take a moment to go inside as many as possible. In our opinion, these are the most perfect places to relax and reflect. Simply be thankful that you are there and that you are blessed in so many ways. It is also a good time to just be still and let Venice speak to you. She may speak to you in a church, through a famous work of art, a decadently crumbling palazzo, one of the many canales, the open sea, or somewhere else along the way. But if your goal is to absorb the mystery of Venice and appreciate that she still stands today in much the same ways she did many centuries ago . . . if you listen, she will speak. And we are certain that you will fall in love.
