The Mom Cave

"Your sacred space is where you can find yourself again and again." - Joseph Campbell

Driving in the car this morning I heard a discussion on the radio about "The Mom Cave." The women were talking about how men have "The Man Cave," aka the garage, or the sports room or TV room - you know a place strictly for the guys. The debate raged as the men called in complaining that women basically rule the whole house anyway, or how the mom cave for most women is the kitchen! Funny stuff, but actually I think they were making a great point. As I was driving I thought, "We already have "The Mom Cave" and it's a lot more luxurious and beautiful than most of those callers were even dreaming of for themselves."

Our Zen-Tents got started in a way very similar to this. As young mothers we were always trying to carve out our own space for peace and quiet. Not an easy thing to do with tiny kids and a husband. We both always had an altar somewhere in our house. This gave us a sacred space to return to when things got a little crazy. At one point we even had a coat closet turned into a meditation room! These were wonderful places of serenity. We filled them with special objects to remind us of how lucky we were in our lives. Small crystals and stones, spiritual sculptures of crosses and Buddhas, souvenirs from special trips, photos, quotes, journals, angel cards, incense, etc.

After years of travel and inspiration, a love of Italian fabrics, visions of India's royal tents and a nod to Moroccan style, the Zen-Tent emerged from our imaginations. The special spot we dreamed of to claim our own peace and re-claim our inner spirits. Beautiful, luxurious and with curtains that close!!

"The Mom Cave" has evolved. We love when our kids or our friends join us there. You'd be amazed how many people can fit inside at the same time. We've had very special moments in our Zen-Tents and we sincerely believe that every mom, every woman, actually every person deserves her/or his own sacred space. Call it whatever you like - just create it and CLAIM your PEACE.

Benefits of Meditation:
It increases blood flow and slows the heart rate.
Increases exercise tolerance in heart patients.
Leads to a deeper level of relaxation.
Good for people with high blood pressure as it brings the B.P. to normal.
Reduces anxiety attacks by lowering the levels of blood lactate.
Decreases muscle tension (any pain due to tension) and headaches.
Builds self-confidence.
It increases serotonin production which influences mood and behaviour. Low levels of serotonin are associated with depression, obesity, insomnia and headaches.
Helps in chronic diseases like allergies , arthritis etc.
Reduces Pre- menstrual Syndrome.
Helps in post-operative healing.
Enhances the immune system. Research has revealed that meditation increases activity of 'natural-killer cells', which kill bacteria and cancer cells.
Also reduces activity of viruses and emotional distress.

TRAVEL for Inspiration

Besides our frequent trips to the Napa Valley (which we love!), business and pleasure have also had us spending a bit of time in San Francisco and Las Vegas this past month. Now, I know these are not grand European holidays, but I must say that any travel is much, much better than no travel at all! Our lives get busy and monotonous . . . if we aren't careful things can get a bit boring. We get sucked into our own little tunnel vision of life. The beauty of travel for us gypsy sisters is the new perspective and new ideas we get while on the road.

" . . . travel is still the best way to shake up your life, shift your point of view, and embrace inspiration, but you must be wide awake and eager to take it in, or it's a waste."

- quote from a book I just finished, Very Valentine by Adriana Trigiani

So the message of the month, before holiday craziness sets in ~ TRAVEL!!! Even if it's somewhere near your home. Get out, go somewhere, do something different, have little adventures. Be open to the inspiration of new people, places, textures, foods, sights and sounds. Then when you come home you can appreciate the beauty of your everyday life a little bit more.
"Ordinary life is artful." - quote from same book

July Newsletter

"People turn to spirit when their foundations are shaking, only to discover that it is spirit that is shaking them."
News & Thought
September 2010

Times are still crazy. Perhaps it is spirit calling to us, shaking us, waiting for us to pay attention. This month we are clearing out the clutter of our lives and creating more space for the sacred. We've included a few tips in the newsletter to help you bring more beauty and spirit into your life. Namaste.

We know that you are all familiar with our ZenTents . . .

and those of you that already have one are hopefully experiencing the advantage of keeping a permanent sacred space in your home: more peace, relaxation and beauty right there waiting for you. We love having our ZenTent space welcoming us everyday. It is an easy habit to form and it quickly begins calling to you - come in, sit down, relax into the silence.

Slow life down a little bit and enjoy it more! The silence, the quiet, the void; this is where we re-connect and re-energize. ZenTents are custom made for each client to match your mood, style and home. Please visit our website if you haven't been there in awhile.

Below you will find tips and product suggestions for creating your own Sacred Space.

The Venetian ZenTent
Just one example of the beauty and peace that we love.
A designated space makes it easy to return each day without having to prep and clean and find a new spot when you are ready for your relaxation time.

Buddhist Altars
These are antique and fairly small and light. Starting with a beautiful altar or even a simple table is the easiest way to create your own sacred space. Just clear and select a small area of your room where you can sit in peace and quiet, gather a few items that are special to you and voila!

Ex Votos are devotional objects offered as thanks for answered prayers. Ours are Italian antiques, full of history and spirit. Place items that have special meaning to you on your altar. These items can be religious symbols, stones, crytstals, photos - anything that reminds you to feel peaceful, happy, grateful, content. This is a space only for you, allow it to be eclectic and expressive.

In Closing . . .

Add soft cushions and throws. Soft candlelight. Incense or sage.

And enjoy your Sacred Spot. Return to it often. May you find Peace, Joy and Happiness there.

Loving the Napa Valley

Well, you never know where business will take you. For the past few months we have been going to Napa about once a week to work with the wineries. Our recycled wine bottle candles are a perfect fit in the tasting rooms. Very eco-friendly and personalized for each winery. Yes, it's tough. We drive to the beautiful Napa Valley, pick up wine bottles, deliver candles and enjoy complimentary wine tasting. All in a hard days work!
